Stainless Steel Butt Weld Elbow for Industrial Piping Systems
A stainless steel butt weld elbow provides a strong welded fitting for changing flow direction in industrial piping systems. It can be used for 90° long radius turns, 90° short radius compact layouts, and 45° long radius directional adjustments.
In addition, butt-weld construction creates a continuous metal connection after welding, making the elbow suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature or corrosive media applications. As part of the Nonleak Butt-Weld Fittings range, this product supports oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, shipbuilding, chemical processing and offshore piping systems.
Understanding Elbow Types: Selecting the Right Configuration
Elbow type selection should match the required turning angle, available installation space and pressure loss requirements. Therefore, 90° LR, 90° SR and 45° LR elbows serve different layout needs.
| Elbow Type | Description | Best Application |
| 90° Long Radius (LR) | Center-to-face dimension = 1.5 x NPS | Standard directional change with lower pressure loss and smoother flow |
| 90° Short Radius (SR) | Center-to-face dimension = 1.0 x NPS | Compact installations where space is limited |
| 45° Long Radius | Gradual 45° directional change | Offsets and smoother directional adjustments with reduced flow resistance |
Engineering Excellence at Every Bend
Each butt weld elbow should support accurate alignment, stable welding and smooth flow performance during installation.
-
Seamless or Welded Construction: Select seamless or welded construction according to pipe size, pressure class and project specification.
-
Precision Bend Geometry: Controlled forming helps maintain consistent wall thickness through the bend and reduce thinning at the extrados.
-
Smooth Internal Surface: A smooth internal radius helps reduce turbulence and supports stable flow.
-
Beveled Ends: Standard bevel preparation supports field welding and fit-up with matching stainless steel pipes.
Material Options for Butt Weld Elbow Applications
Material selection should match the medium, temperature, chloride level, corrosion risk and project standard. For this reason, Nonleak offers butt weld elbow options in austenitic and duplex stainless steel grades.
| Material Grade | Key Properties | Typical Applications |
| 304/304L | Excellent corrosion resistance, good formability | General chemical, food processing, water treatment |
| 316/316L | Superior chloride resistance, higher strength | Marine, pharmaceutical, coastal facilities |
| Duplex 2205 | Twice the yield strength of 316L, excellent SCC resistance | Offshore platforms, desalination, sour service |
| Duplex 2507 | Super duplex, extreme corrosion and pitting resistance | Highly aggressive chemical, high-chloride environments |
Global Standard Compliance
This product is designed for projects that require recognized dimensional, material and testing standards. ASME B16.9 covers factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings, including dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing and markings. ASTM A403/A403M is also commonly referenced for wrought austenitic stainless steel pressure piping fittings.
All elbows are manufactured and tested to meet or exceed:
-
ASME B16.9: Factory-made wrought buttwelding fitting dimensions
-
ASTM A403/A403M: Wrought austenitic stainless steel pressure piping fittings
-
DIN / ISO / JIS options: Available according to project requirements
-
SH3408 / SH3409 / SH3410 – Petrochemical Industry Standards
-
HG/T21635, DL/T695, SY/T0510 – Industry-Specific Standards
