Stainless Steel Butt-Weld Pipe Fittings

Stainless steel butt-weld pipe fittings are used to connect welded piping, change direction, create branches, reduce pipe size and close pipe ends. Nonleak’s product range includes elbows, tees, reducers, crosses, caps, return bends and lap-joint stub ends.

For each fitting, specify the type and configuration, NPS/DN, wall thickness, material grade, dimensional standard and weld-end requirements. Inspection, documentation and availability should be confirmed against the project RFQ before ordering.

Product Range Overview

Use the information below to prepare a clear request for quotation. The values and standards applicable to each fitting must be confirmed for the specified product and project.

ParameterWhat to Specify
Fitting TypeElbow, tee, reducer, cross, cap, return bend or lap-joint stub end; specify the configuration.
Nominal SizeNPS/DN for every connection end, including reducing or branch sizes.
Wall ThicknessApplicable schedule or nominal wall thickness.
MaterialMaterial specification, grade and fitting class where applicable; confirm availability.
Dimensional StandardASME B16.9 where applicable, or another confirmed standard or approved drawing.
Weld-End PreparationApplicable butt-welding end requirements and approved details.
Inspection & DocumentsRequired certificates, examination scope, reports and marking.
Design ConditionsService medium, design pressure, temperature and governing piping code.
Supply & DeliveryQuantity, target delivery and packaging requirements.

Important: Nominal size, schedule, material grade and an ASME reference do not by themselves establish a universal pressure rating or suitability for a specific installation.

Manufacturing and Quality Documentation

For stainless steel butt-weld fittings, the required manufacturing route, material identification, dimensional checks and examination records depend on the specified product and purchase requirements.

Include the applicable standards, material grade, fitting configuration and required inspection documents in your RFQ so that the proposed supply scope can be reviewed before order acceptance.

For a broader description of Nonleak’s published quality-control framework, see our Quality Control page. Its system-specific test statements should not be assumed to apply to every butt-weld fitting.

Selecting Butt-Weld Fittings for Industrial Piping

Stainless steel butt-weld fittings can be specified for welded piping layouts that require direction changes, branch connections, size transitions or end closures.

Choosing a suitable fitting involves more than nominal diameter. The project must define material grade, wall thickness, dimensional standard, service conditions, weld-end preparation and inspection requirements.

A welded connection should not be described as inherently leak-proof. Joint performance depends on the approved design, compatible components, qualified fabrication, examination and completed system testing under the governing project requirements.

Selecting a stub end also requires confirming the matching backing flange, lap geometry, wall thickness and dimensional standard. Review our stub end flange selection guide before preparing the project RFQ.

Why Specification Clarity Matters for Butt-Weld Fittings

Clear Fitting Configuration

A complete product description identifies the fitting type, angle or radius, run and branch sizes, and any special geometry. These details help avoid mismatches between drawings, quotations and the delivered fitting.

Material and Dimensional Standard Alignment

Material grade and fitting dimensions are separate requirements. State the applicable material specification and grade alongside the dimensional standard and wall thickness for each line item.

Inspection Defined by the Purchase Requirements

Examination methods and documentation vary by product specification, fitting class and project inspection plan. State any required material records, dimensional reports, NDE scope or third-party inspection in the RFQ rather than assuming every method applies to every batch.

Documentation and RFQ Coordination

Provide a bill of materials, drawings or piping isometrics where available. Confirm marking, inspection records, certificates, quantity and delivery requirements as part of the quotation review.

Standards and Specification Responsibilities

No single standard completes a butt-weld fitting purchase specification. Confirm the required edition and the responsibility of each document.

ReferencePrimary RoleRFQ Check
ASME B16.9Factory-made wrought butt-weld fitting dimensions and tolerances within its scope.Fitting pattern, size, geometry and edition.
ASTM A403/A403MWrought austenitic stainless steel fitting material and product requirements.Grade, class and required examinations.
ASTM A815/A815MSpecified wrought ferritic, ferritic/austenitic and martensitic stainless steel fittings.Applicable grade and class when relevant.

ASME B16.9-2024 identifies its standard scope as NPS 1/2 through NPS 48. Products outside that scope should not automatically be represented as ASME B16.9 fittings. The material specification and dimensional standard must be matched item by item.

Request a Butt-Weld Fittings Quote

To support an accurate quotation, include the fitting type, NPS/DN, wall thickness or schedule, material specification and grade, applicable dimensional standard and edition, quantity and required delivery timing.

Where relevant, also provide the end preparation, inspection requirements, required certificates, drawings or a bill of materials. Availability, inspection scope and documentation can then be confirmed for the quoted item.

Applications

Butt-weld fittings are used across welded piping systems where component geometry, material, fabrication and inspection requirements are defined by the project. Examples include:

Industrial Process Piping
Elbows, tees and reducers for equipment and process-line routing.

Water Treatment and Utilities
Welded direction changes, branches and size transitions where material compatibility is confirmed.

Chemical and Petrochemical Projects
Fitting selection subject to the process fluid, corrosion conditions and applicable project specifications.

Equipment and Skid Packages
Compact piping arrangements subject to approved layouts and weld-end details.

Marine or Power-Plant Auxiliary Piping
Applications where the specified material, applicable code and project qualification requirements are satisfied.

Application examples do not establish approval for a particular pressure, temperature, fluid or regulated service. Final selection remains subject to project engineering review.
